About Us
The vision of Hurricane Maria Assistance & Relief Institutional Alliance Inc., formerly known as Doctors For Maria Relief, is to create support for medical efforts already taking place in Puerto Rico. We provide volunteer doctors and nurses, and donate medicine, food, and water to the victims of Hurricane Maria; we coordinate these efforts holistically. As per Governor Ricardo Rosello's executive order, we work with community-based organizations and governmental contacts on the ground in Puerto Rico. We facilitate the doctors and nurses in getting certified by the Puerto Rico Department of Health so they could practice medicine and write prescriptions while in Puerto Rico. The initial mission of this coordinated humanitarian medical relief effort consisted of traveling throughout the island for 14 days with over 25 doctors, nurses, and other volunteers from across the United States. The mission provided a wide array of medical services at clinics, hospitals, domestic violence shelters, drug rehabilitation clinics, and door to door relief in the mountainous regions and harder to reach flooded areas, including surgery at Centro Medico-Rio Piedras. We also provided medications to animal shelters in need. We serviced hundreds of people in 16 municipalities throughout the devastated areas of the island of Puerto Rico through donations of medicine and medical supplies. We have provided Puerto Rico the long-term services of 430 volunteer surgeons and over 300 doctors and nurses. Moving forward, we hope to be able to continue this successful effort with the support of donors, partnerships and volunteers.
On Monday, November 6, 2017 we hosted a panel entitled After Hurricane Maria: A Discussion on the State of Puerto Rico's Humanitarian Relief Efforts. Our panel that will discuss and share our experiences, best practices, and insight on providing humanitarian aid and medical relief in Puerto Rico, and recommendations on how to overcome challenges based on our efforts' recent mission to Puerto Rico.
